• Welcome to The Cave of Dragonflies forums, where the smallest bugs live alongside the strongest dragons.

Guests are not able to post messages or even read certain areas of the forums. Now, that's boring, don't you think? Registration, on the other hand, is simple, completely free of charge, and does not require you to give out any personal information at all. As soon as you register, you can take part in some of the happy fun things at the forums such as posting messages, voting in polls, sending private messages to people and being told that this is where we drink tea and eat cod.

Of course I'm not forcing you to do anything if you don't want to, but seriously, what have you got to lose? Five seconds of your life?

    BCE/CE or BC/AD?

That's a good point, but it doesn't answer the question of why we need to use AD/CE to begin with-- if there's a BC/BCE at the end, it's past 1 AD/CE, and if there isn't, it's after 1 AD/CE. This seems like a perfectly logical system to me, and it avoids all that "Anno Domini" shit that seems to...

    BCE/CE or BC/AD?

I've encountered the terminology before; it's just that here in the States it's nowhere near as commonly used as BC/AD. Come to think of it, AD/CE are just really redundant terms in general; I never use either when referring to the year and unless you're referring to events that occurred prior...

    BCE/CE or BC/AD?

Eh, I don't know. America is pretty far behind when it comes to that sort of stuff. I'll shut up, though. Your arguments make more sense than mine.

    BCE/CE or BC/AD?

I'm not...? I don't know where everyone got the idea that I'm bothered by usage of the terms, I just find it kind of silly!

    BCE/CE or BC/AD?

why did i not remember that asdfndsfndsifdoaodmaiosdmiadasdsfgh Outside of serious academic papers I don't think I've seen anyone use the terms before... I understand you're not Christian but this is pretty inconsequential.

    BCE/CE or BC/AD?

It's funny because everyone's immediate response upon seeing this thread seemed to be "MUST USE NON-SECULAR TERMINOLOGY". And obscure non-secular terminology at that. I just don't get the reasoning behind using BCE/CE?? Using them doesn't make your arguments inherently Christian. So what's the...

    BCE/CE or BC/AD?

...you know, this thread is actually pretty hilarious.

    BCE/CE or BC/AD?

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but isn't 476 the year that Rome fell? Obviously the empire was in decline beforehand but something important (the murder of the last Roman emperor, iirc) occurred then. Then again I was never good in history class so I'm probably wrong.

    BCE/CE or BC/AD?

If only... Actually, I'm curious-- why isn't the turning point the fall of the Roman Empire? If I had to decide, that would be the best event to divide history between.

    BCE/CE or BC/AD?

The turning point between the two eras is still the birth of Jesus, so it's still religious. And even then, they're so far removed from their original meaning that BC/AD are more or less secular; regardless, I find it silly that you must use the non-religious terms to refer to the year.

    BCE/CE or BC/AD?

I mean, I just refer to it as "2011" and not "AD 2011". Also, am I the only person who finds it funny how everybody is rushing to switching to use BCE/CE now that they're aware of them?

    BCE/CE or BC/AD?

I use BC. I've never used the term "AD/CE" at any point in my life and BC/BCE sound more or less identical, so...
